Six Steps to a More Organized Dresser

Dec 16, 2022

A person pulling out a dresser drawer to show their organization.

Shopping for new furniture – like a new dresser – can be stressful. Or, it can be a blast! A new dresser provides a new space that you can fill with anything your heart desires. However, as a dresser is also one of the most used furniture pieces in a home, it can get messy quickly. Never fear! In this article, we’ll give you six great tips to help you maintain organized dresser drawers. Read on, apply these guidelines, and you’ll ensure that your clothes remain neatly and attractively arranged.

1. Start with the largest items first

When organizing your dresser drawers, it’s important to start with your larger items. This might include coats, jackets or sweaters that might take up a lot of space in your drawers and make it difficult for you to fit other clothing items in. When possible, hang these larger pieces on sturdy hangers (1) in your wardrobe or closet, then organize the rest of your clothes in your dresser drawers.

2. Sort clothes by type

It’s a good idea to group bottoms, undergarments and tops separately– and you might prefer to sort them by color, as well. Whatever method works best for you is fine; the key is to keep things organized so that you can easily find what you’re looking for when you need it.

3. Hang shirts as well, if possible

T-shirts, dresses and other tops can be a bit of a pain to organize. They often get bunched up or folded awkwardly, which takes away from their overall appearance. If you have the space, it's much more efficient to hang these kinds of tops on sturdy hangers rather than folding them in your dresser drawers. If you must put your shirts in your dresser, tri-fold them tightly and neatly and place the folded shirts in the drawer vertically, arranging them neatly in rows.

4. Put your undergarments in the top drawers

Dressers typically come with similar layouts, and the two drawers on top are perfect for your socks, underwear, or bras.  Keeping these much-needed items in the top drawers will avoid awkward bending and stretching as you search for them later on. You should also make sure that these items are organized according to color or type, so it’s easy to find what you need quickly.

5. Fill in your remaining clothes

Now that the more common items are organized, it’s time to put your remaining bottoms, pajamas and miscellaneous items such as swimsuits, sweats, or athletic gear in the remaining drawers. Make sure you group similar clothing items, so it’s easy to locate what you need quickly and efficiently.

6. Use drawer dividers to keep things neat

When you’re organizing your dresser drawers, it can be helpful to add drawer organizers (2) or divider trays to keep items separated and organized. This can help prevent clothes from wrinkling or getting tangled with other items. Plus, dividers can make it easier to find what you’re looking for when you need it.

By following these simple tips, you can make the most of your dresser space and keep your clothes looking their best. Whether you prefer a streamlined look or one that is more colorful and unexpected, it is possible to find the right organizational system for your needs. With a little bit of effort, you can have clean and tidy drawers that make getting dressed much easier every day.

Common Questions

How do you store shirts if you can't hang them?

There are a few different ways to store shirts, if you cannot hang them. One way is to fold, or roll, the shirts carefully and stack them in your dresser drawers, making sure not to cram too many items into each drawer.

Another method, as we mentioned, is to arrange them vertically in rows, making use of the empty space at the top of the drawer.Yet another option is to use drawer dividers or organizers, which can help keep your shirts separate from other clothing items and prevent them from becoming wrinkled or messy.
